Master Harold... and the Boys in Sewanee, USA

Master Harold- click for link

"Master Harold"...and the Boys is at the Tennessee Williams Center, Sewanee on 12 Oct 2005.  The director is Del Hamilton.

"Universally recognized as Athol Fugard’s finest play, “Master Harold” …and the boys unfolds over one rainy afternoon in 1950 in Port Elizabeth in South Africa. Hally, a 17-year old white child of privilege, comes to his family-owned tea room after school to hang out and avoid his homework with Sam and Willie, the black men who run the cafe. There, a fateful telephone call compels him to chose to put childhood behind him and take his place in the society of men. But in a country that has just legalized racism through apartheid, it is a choice that may only come at the expense of his love for Sam, the black servant who has been a surrogate father to him. Where do you draw the line between who you are and who you want to be? And how much control do you have in that decision? Together, in an afternoon that will change their relationship forever, Sam and Hally teach each other a lot about the world storming around them (and a little about ballroom dancing)."

Master Harold... and the boys- click for link

Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre presents "Master Harold"...and the Boys, directed by K Todd Freeman.  Its on from 15-30 October 2005 (weekends only).

"Hally is a white boy in 1950’s South Africa. Sam and Willie are black men who work at his family's restaurant. One afternoon, Hallie does his homework while Sam and Willie train for a ballroom dancing contest. The three share lessons learned and fond memories, but when news comes that Hally’s alcoholic father will return home, the personal becomes political. At once a coming of age drama and a scathing indictment of apartheid, this modern masterpiece continues to speak to the world’s many racial injustices."

Decio Mainstage Theatre University of Notre Dame present "Master Harold"...and the Boys on 27 Oct 2005.

"Universally recognized as Fugard’s finest play, “’Master Harold’… and the Boys” unfolds on a rainy afternoon in 1950 South Africa. Hally, an upper-class 17-year-old white boy, receives a phone call that necessitates a difficult choice. If Hally takes his place as an adult in South African society- a society that has recently legalized racism through the institution of apartheid- his relationship with Sam, a black servant who has been his surrogate father, will change forever. Fugard’s play has a particular poignancy for modern audiences who know how long South Africa’s devastating policies were destined to endure".
