Title: 20 British cult films
Post by: Iain Fisher on March 28, 2015, 07:18:57 PM
Some interesting titles:

20 Wish You Were Here, 1987
19 Gregory's Girl, 1981 but the Scots accents may be difficult for some.  A minor classic.
18 Frightmare, 1974
17 Theatre of Blood with Vincent Price, 1973.  Price is an actor who decides to kill the critics to destroy his career.  Each death is unique.
16 Damage, 1992

15 Nil By Mouth, 1997
14 Quadrophenia, 1979.  Ken was a possible candidate to film The Who's follow up to Tommy.
13 Jubilee, 1978.  A Derek Jarman film
12 Eskimo Nell, 1975
11 My Beautiful Laundrette, 1985.  A brave film tackling anti-gay and racist feelings in Thatcherite Britain.  Daniel Day Lewis is superb.

10 Threads 1984
9 Scum 1979
8 Peeping Tom, 1960.  One of the all time great films by Michael Powell.  The public reaction forced Powell out of films.
7 Rita, Sue and Bob Too, 1987
6 Kes, 1969.  Typical Ken Loach social realism, a beautiful funny and sad film

5 Witchfinder General, 1968.  Greatly admired, and with comparisons to Ken's work, but I just don't like it
4 The Wicker Man, 1973.  Edward Woodward, famous in Britain for the cult series Callan, is perfect alongside Christopher Lee.  Ken's Louse of Usher (I think it is) pays a homage to this film (the people with the masks)
3 The Devils, 1972, by Ken
2 Withnail & I, 1987
1 Trainspotting, 1996.  As cult as you can get.

Interesting list. You could make another list of 20 British cult films with half or 10 of the films, being films directed by Ken Russell.
