Tony Bryant interviews Peter Mitchell in Sur in English, 25 Mar 2022.

"One of Peter's most memorable periods came while he was performing with the Minstrels in Blackpool, when he was asked to dance in a Ken Russell production called Valentino, a film based on the life of Italian movie star and sex symbol, Rudolph Valentino, which starred Rudolf Nureyev.

"Ken Russell was an amazing film director, of course, and I had an amazing six months filming in Blackpool. It was purely a dance part, no speaking. Watching Nureyev rehearse and perform everyday was just incredible, However, he could be really temperamental, but he was very much a star," Peter explains, with a hint of excitement, as he recalls the period"

Savage Messiah: Ken Russell / William Hurt

William Hurt has sadly passed away.

After a couple of television roles his career started with Altered States.  Not a bad place to start.


He appeared in major mainstream films such as Spielberg’s AI, but he also often undertook quirky films different from the mainstream, such as Children of a Lesser God (he won the Oscar for this), Kiss of the Spider Woman and M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village.

"The cast in general more than live up to the challenges posed by the material. The difficult themes present in the script ask for a lot of sensitivity from the actors, not least from India Lewis, who carries off her emotionally intense role with a maturity that hits hard as we race towards the production’s conclusion".

From a desolate and unnamed city, four voices emerge. A, C, B and M desperately seek out love, touch and light, and in the process touch on life’s many ecstasies and heartbreaks.

Sarah Kane’s Crave is a beautiful and unnerving one-act play, meditating on desire, pregnancy, belonging and companionship.

Steven on recent events in Ukraine.

As Russian leader Vladimir Putin appears to be playing from the Hitler playbook one cannot be more acutely aware of such ‘gangster’ politics than Bertolt Brecht in his formidable play ‘The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui’, 1941, when in the final lines he writes;

“If only we could act instead of talking,
We wouldn’t always end up on our arse…..
Don’t yet rejoice in his defeat you men
Although the world stood up and stopped the bastard
The bitch that brought him is in heat again!â€
