Steven Berkoff will perform his one man show with The Tell Tale Heart and Dog.  It is on 12-23 Apr 2011 at the Riverside Studios, London.

"Tell Tale Heart is a frighteningly macabre adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s gothic tale of fear, murder and madness. A man, who states that he is sane, tells of how he murdered his neighbour – a fishy-eyed miser. But, not long after the deed is done, paranoia starts to play its part - will the murderer be caught out?

Dog recreates a day in the life of a football hooligan and his pit bull terrier, Roy. Throughout the piece, the action swaps between the skinhead and the loyal pet, showing the vulgarity of the hooligan and the reactions of Roy to the cruel but sometimes loving antics of his owner."

I just saw this performance and recommend it.

Five young actors starting their careers in theatre, performing with enthusiasm and understanding.

Jennifer Levitt as Sylv easily handles the seductive part of the role, prowling the stage between Les a and Mike, but she also manages to bring out the sadness and intelligence in the roles as she struggles to escape.  Les and Mike ("now you know our names") are a good duo with their eloquent violence- Charlie Fairless and interestingly Mekala Oxley, an actress but playing the role as a male.

Two difficult parts, Dad (Matthew Henry Dando) and Mum (played in drag by Damien Hallett- Berkoff's production also used an actor in drag).  They each handle their major scenes well, the reminiscing about Mosley and the visit to the cinema.

The director, Adrian Figueroa, followed Berkoff's vision of the staging of the play (with minimal props) and the whole works well.

One minor criticism is the motorbike scene, which should be a highlight of the play but was skimmed over, and also wasn't realistic with Mike looking like he was riding a horse, bouncing up and down, rather than a motorbike.

But this is a minor point, overall worth seeing.

Berkoff is now performing in On The Waterfront, and George Dillon is doing a couple of performances of Graft, based on the short stories of Berkoff.   Both are recommended.  See the news page of the site

Linda Marlowe does her excellent Berkoff´s Women in Guildford, UK in May 2008.  It is a collection of pieces for women from Berkoff´s plays and she does them excellently.  Very highly recommended.

Hi Darren,

I saw Berkoff perform Tell-Tale Heart and Dog in Brighton and it really was physical theatre at its best.  The show was packed out with I guess around 1000 people and a very noisy audience before the start.  After he came on within ten minutes there was total silence as he mimed opening a door in Tell-Tale Heart.  He has total control over the audience.

Berkoff does two "one man" shows, Shakespeare's Villains and Tell-Tale Heart/Dog.  Both are really good.  Villains is next on in Warrington on 1 Nov 2007.  Currently there are no other shows planned, but this changes very rapidly.  The best is to keep checking the news page of the site
www.iainfisher.com/berkoff/berkoff-news.html
where the shows are listed when they are announced, along with other shows such as Agamemnon in York and Ophelia in Boston, USA.

Hope this helps and hope you get to see him soon.

Iain
