Ken's House

"In Search of the Headwaters of the Nile"

There are two Niles, the White Nile and the Blue Nile. The White Nile flows from Lake Victoria. But one can go farther than that on a feeder river to the Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda. The Blue Nile flows from Lake Tana in Ethopia.

The Ancient Greeks were the first ones to seek the headwaters of the Nile, but it was Father Pedro Paez who first discovered the source of the Blue Nile in 1622.

The source of the While Nile, Lake Victoria, was not discovered until 1858 by Speke. And this was confirmed by Stanley.

But it was not till Henri Coetze traveled from the mouth of the Nile to the source of the White Nile in January, 2004, that anybody was known to travel the entire length of the Nile. He was followed by Pasquaale Scatorro and Gordon Brown, in April of that year, being the first known men to travel from the mouth of the Nile to the source of the Blue Nile.

Then an year later in April, 2005, Coetze and Peter Meredith were the first known men to follow the White Nile past Lake Victoria all the way to the forests of Rwanda.

Then about an year later in March 2006, Neil McGrigor claimed to have found the "true" source of the White Nile, which was farther then anybody else had gone before on the Nile.

At today's exchange rate, Neil McGrigor paid almost two and a quarter million dollars for Ken's house. Actually, I presume he was buying the land on which the house formerly sat, as I understand it, the house was pretty much burned to the ground. Even at twice that price, it was probably not enough to compensate Ken for all that he lost in the fire.

Next time: "In Search for the Headwaters of the Nile."
