Savage Messiah: Ken Russell / Murray Melvin interview
« Last post by Iain Fisher on March 06, 2023, 01:15:46 AM »
A short interview with Murray Melvin by Samira Ahmed, 6 Aug 2014.

The interview covers mainly A Taste of Honey, the stage and film versions, and more briefly Ken's The Devils and Kubrick's Barry Lyndon.  Nice to hear that the actors thought The Boyfriend was a reward for the gruelling work on The Devils.

I met Murray Melvin and he is a modest and likeable person and that comes out in the interview.

The recording of the interview is on the BBC Sounds website

Sarah Kane discussion / Re: CRAVE noun or verb
« Last post by Iain Fisher on February 06, 2023, 11:12:38 PM »
Hi,

Crave is a verb with a few meanings but the closest I think is to long or yearn for someone.  As when one character says “I dream about you” they want or desire the other person.

I don’t know of crave as a noun, the noun would be craving.

Of course the title could refer to different things for different characters, just as in Kane’s play Phaedra’s Love the title is ambiguous, the love could be a person (the person Phaedra loves) or the feeling of love that Phaedra has.

I hope this helps.

Savage Messiah: Ken Russell / Updates to Women in Love and Elgar
« Last post by Iain Fisher on January 22, 2023, 11:34:17 PM »

"Rarely has a great novel been more lovingly, more sensitively or more knowingly brought to the screen" (Arthur Knight, quoted in Jane Jaffe Young, D.H. Lawrence on Screen, 1999, chapter 4).

"... we are exposed to contrapuntal images of blinded World War One mustard gas victims followed by accumulating shots of graves that undermine the jingoistic connotations that have been heaped onto the 'Land of Hope and Glory tune'.  These techniques recall the work of Sergei Eisenstein, a thinker and film practitioner whose ideas have much to offer in the analysis of Russell's films and the critical tirades that plague them" (Kay Dickinson, Off Key, 2008, chapter 3).
