Magic Futurebox present 4.48 Psychosis from 10- 27 May 2012.  It is directed by James Rutherford, featuring Emily Gleeson and Lizzie Vieh.

"A career of horrible-gentle and violent-funny work comes to a close with Sarah Kane's magnum opus, written on the eve of her tragic suicide. In it she tells the inner drama of a mind at the point of combustion. In her hospital room she becomes patient, disease and doctor. She is the Victim of unending cruelties, and her pain knows no limit. She is the Perpetrator of every violence and delivers each blow with a smile. She is the Bystander to her own suffering, deaf to her own shrill screams. At the edge of her death, Sarah Kane teaches us what it means to be alive."

I did the play with 6 actors. 4 portraying different parts of the mind, one non speaking role representing the body and 1 representing the torn connection between the mind and the body. I am getting a chance to put it on again (assuming I can get the rights) on June 12th at 11am for the planet connections festivity in NYC at the gene frankel theatre if anyone is interested.

Having a singer sounds interesting.  Will she be singing text from the play? If she sings songs (so not text from the play) it may distract from the meaning of the play.

How is it going?

Im a South African directing 4.48 Psychosis for an arts festival in June. i have a cast of 2 male and female and a live band with a female vocalist representing her Soul. i muts say this is not an easy production to direct because of the freedom it allows. i think no matter which way you try to go about it people will have their views. i fell inlove with the way Psychosis was put down with know rules, i think we should allow each director to interprut it in their way. you can't run away from the hard words Sarah used, by introducing a band it has in a way toned it down just a little for me.

i don't know what you think

Hi!

I run a theatre company here in Austria and we were turned down by Cassarotto last year. Any thoughts as to why that would have been? It wasn't being performed in German or English here at the time.

I wrote all the usuals in my application, and I want to apply again as I really want to direct the piece - so if you have any suggestions please let me know.

Thanks,
Joanna

On the rights it is worth including in your application:

  • details of the performance (professional/ semi-pro, amateur)
  • the venue if known (name, type and size) and city
  • dates if known, or approximate dates
  • whether paid or free
  • why you want to do the piece and why you like Sarah Kane's work
  • details of other work you have done, with reviews if available

Hi...
I think it is very difficult to add  comics features to  "4:48 Psychosis", because the risk ,as Iain says, is to produce a caricature.
On the other hand, opposed  cut, played on  madness' /hysteria, is likely to become nonsense delirious , which does not merit the work.
The hard work in "4:48 Psycosis" is to create a  dynamic-unicum, which is explained to the public but when the work is represented.
I suggest ... help with video, with  dance or physical-theater controscene, that may add l details and amplify the central scene.
Good job.

absolutely i agree, we've started working with the cast and they do seem to have taken that path. We're very interested in the tranfer of control and the constant changes in vunrability. Only time will tell if we get the result we want but we're quietly confident! Thanks for the comment it's clarified a few things for us.  We'll let you know how we get on!

Thanks!

Hi,

It sounds an interesting approach.

On your three aspects of the person: doctor, voice and patient, I would say avoid making each too black and white.  Leave some ambiguity in it.  Just as in Blasted Ian is not 100% "selfish" and Kate is not solely "naive and innocent", rather both are deeper which makes them more interesting.

For your three roles make each a full character, rather than a caricature.  One trait may dominate but others traits are there as well.

What do you think?
