An early role as an actor was in 1964 in Sir Thomas More by Shakespeare and others.

It was in the Nottingham Playhouse from 10 Jun 1964- 4 Jul 1964. The director was Frank Dunlop assisted by Richard Digby Day.  And the title role was played by Ian McKellen.

Ian McKellen says "Our company was augmented by the arrival of Steven Berkoff. He was quiet and not much popular. Onstage his movements were eccentrically wooden – but this was early in his career and before he had studied mime with LeCoq or begun to write his explosive plays".
