GLBT Characters in Ken's Films

(1/2) > >>

BoyScoutKevin:
I agree. Except for Derek Jarman, who I have yet to check out, Ken seems to have more films with GLBT characters than any other director. But isn't it interested, that the other two directors named were British born, Hitchcock, or American born, but did most of their work in Britain, Kubrick. One wonders if there are any non-GLBT directors born in America and who have done most of their work here in America, who have done as many GLBT-character films as the directors already mentioned.

And thank-you for all the responses, as they give me something to think about.

Iain Fisher:
I chose two directors at random (well, directors I like at random):

Hitchcock.  I did better than I expected:
- Anthony Perkins cross dressing in Psycho (poor typecast Perkins)
- Implied lesbianism in Rebecca (Mrs Danver's love of Rebecca)
- Rope (the two murderers)
- The Birds (the schoolmistess, possibly bisexual)
- the German version of Murder.  Hitchcock did an English and a German version of the film with different actors.  In the German one the character- the tightrope walker- plays the role as a homosexual
- The Lady Vanishes.  Not sure but I had the feeling there was some implied lesbian relationship, but I could be wrong, particularly as I can't remember any details.

And Kubrick:
- A Clockwork Orange and the bodyguard of the novelist
- Eyes Wide Shut- lots
- The Shining- lots at the end with the ghosts/vampire characters emerging
- Spartacus.  The Tony Curtis Character
- Barry Lyndon.  The two soldiers bathing.

So Ken remains top.

Iain Fisher:
At least one of Jarman's films (Sebastian) only contains gay characters, as far as I can remember.

Ken's Crimes of Passion has Anthony Perkins cross dressing.  Tommy has Uncle Earnie (gay paedophile).  Whore has a lesbian relationship (perhaps not realised by the characters, and probably not consumated).

Thank-you for your response, I'll make it a point to check out the films of Derek Jarman.
