Sarah Kane discussion / Re: Sad
« Last post by Iain Fisher on July 12, 2024, 11:12:01 AM »
Sarah Kane’s work helps others to talk about sadness.  What she did so well was to articulate the feelings of trauma and pain that many people feel, and in that way her works become a companion.  (So do the works of Sylvia Plath such as her poem Daddy which you quote from).

I am sure your message will also help others who are feeling the same.  It is always good to reach out to people who have had similar traumatic experiences.  You and others are welcome to post here.

Also sometimes speaking to someone anonymously can be helpful.  That is why organisations like The Samaritans (www.samaritans.org or in the USA https://988lifeline.org ) are so important.

Sarah Kane discussion / Sad
« Last post by Sal on July 11, 2024, 08:38:08 PM »
So, I'm 24 (25) , I heard about Sarah when I was 19, in drama class. I fell in love with her from the start and after that, I've been falling more and more. I have experienced severe abuse, including sexual, as a child, I really feel I'm breaking apart and I am trying to see through all those pieces and understand myself and somehow, be able to tell what I feel and what I've seen so... More and more I try to speak about my pain and violence and trauma and heartbreak, Sarah becomes more and more important because her plays are so true in attempting that and just, she touches my soul very much and my heart. And I can not describe, since I've known her how sad her story makes me. It is contradictory, because I want her to be at peace and at the same time I want her to be alive but in a better world where she can be without pain. And I can do nothing about it- black telephones off at the root. This makes me cry so much, at the same time because I see so much similarity of mine to her and also, because I just, simply, not egocentrically, care about her and feel and know she is gone but still, her plays make her horribly alive in my heart, more alive than everybody I know probably... Because nobody has touched me there. The plays speak very loudly.
So this is it, big feeling, kinda hard to carry without expression.
I know many people respect and love her, I remember giving her plays to my friend and him being shocked. And she writes so sincerely, it is like that, it touches you to the core. How do you cope with sadness? What do you feel? I don't think she's anywhere but if she is, I hope it is peace and kind. <3 I love you, Sarah. <3

Sarah Kane discussion / "And the bus driver loses it" SOURCE?
« Last post by Roger on July 10, 2024, 12:40:10 AM »
Iain, I'm curious about this reference in CRAVE. Somewhere I recall there was a tabloid/newspaper image of a British bus driver, abandoning his bus and stripping off his clothes--nut I've not been able to find it. Can you, or anyone, point me to this? Since she uses the photographic image of the fleeing Vietnamese girl, it seems possible that Kane was alluding here to a published image, too.

Steven Berkoff discussion / Steve Berkoff reading Byron's Don Juan
« Last post by Iain Fisher on June 10, 2024, 08:06:17 PM »
Steven Berkoff will read from Lord Byron’s poem Don Juan. This will be with music from the Romantic period (and complimentary prosecco!).

The music includes Harold in Italy by Berlioz, inspired by Byron’s poetry.  George White will perform on viola with Elena Toponogova on piano.

“The South Downs Poetry Festival is delighted to link up with the Keats-Shelley Memorial Association to celebrate the bicentenary of Lord Byron’s death. Admired and reviled in his own time, Byron is now recognised as one of the great Romantic poets”.

This is part of the Festival of Chichester on 9 July 2024.  Details are on the Festival website click here
