"The Plague of the Working-Class: An Analytical Study in Steven Berkoff’s Greek" by Ahmed Rasheed Ibrahim and Nahidh Falih Sulaiman.

The study is described as focussing on "analyzing the play Greek (1980)... from a Marxist point of view. Berkoff himself was a Marxist during the period in which he wrote Greek, so Marxist themes are prevalent in his plays... The study concentrates on analyzing the Marxist identity of the characters of the play, and how it relates to their daily lives."

The study is in Arabic. Details are here

Savage Messiah: Ken Russell / The Music Lovers changing attitudes
« Last post by Iain Fisher on December 24, 2023, 06:30:55 PM »
Nice to see some reviewers writing honestly rather than the usual cliches.  In a review of Kirill Serebrennikov's film Tchaikovsky's Wife the review lists other films on Tchaikovsky.

"Those seeking a relatively conventional telling of the story can always seek out Ken Russell’s florid 1970 offering The Music Lovers, where Glenda Jackson’s full-on performance as the ill-fated spouse outshines Richard Chamberlain's creditable turn as Tchaikovsky."

A nice contrast with the usual reviews "so filled with wretched excesses that one hardly knows where to begin" and "bearing a vague resemblance to, Tchaikovsky, his life and times".

The review of Tchaikovsky's Wife is by Trevor Johnston, Time Out, 23 Dec 2023.  For the full review click here

Hi, Iain, A brief visit to wish you and all here the very best for the New Year. Progressing on all my projects. In the spirit of Ken, new music films on my site below. Things are going to vastly change on the planet and I feel we are in the throes of Robert Fuest's wonderful 1973 film "The Final Programme". In some ways, this is not a bad thing. Bob was a visionary and so was Ken. We need more iconoclasts, otherwise film production will die from a glut of Marvel superheroes and cretinous commercials. Ken loathed commercials and said they were shaping the world in their own image, and he said that this image was a rotting death's-head. New blood will come out of CGI and related technologies bringing new ideas and a whole new movement of production with them. Ken and Bob would have approved and probably joined in. The television, movie and commercial models have been out of date for 25 years. I am excited about the future and watching all the wonderful work to come. Having said a mouthful, I wish you all the very best and leave a big hug and a wee smile. Keep up the great work, Iain. I aim to put those two "Clouds Of Glory" films of Ken's up on my site in the New Year and will let you guys know when it's done. It's a beautiful planet. Keep Your Sense Of Wonder! Take care of yourselves.

Ken Russell’s Shocking Rhapsodies

"Passionate, transgressive, over-the-top, and unforgettable: the films of British iconoclast Ken Russell have rarely been surpassed in their feverish visual imagination and sheer audaciousness. Courting controversy after controversy with provocations like The Devils, Mahler, and Altered States, Russell explored the extremes of sexuality, violence, religion, and creativity through elaborate, often eye-popping mise-en-scène and performances of hysterical excess. The result is a cinema that still feels daring and fresh, with unbridled romanticism and surreal flights of fancy woven into his boundary-pushing narratives.

FEATURING: The Boy Friend (1971), The Devils (1971), Savage Messiah (1972), Mahler (1974), Altered States (1980), Gothic (1986), The Lair of the White Worm (1988), Salome’s Last Dance (1988), The Rainbow (1989), Whore (1991)"
