When someone asked author Dick Francis, if he had a bad relationship with his father, as so many of his characters had a bad relationship with their father, Dick Francis replied (and this is a paraphrase): "No, actually, my brother and I had a good relationship with our father, and that is why I can write about bad relationships between fathers and sons. If I had a bad relationship with my own father, I could not write about other bad relationships between fathers and sons."

Which is just the opposite of Russell. Knowing the bad relationship between him and his father, why we see so few relationships between father and son in his films, and why the majority of the seen relationships are so bad.

Next time: Something else.

The relationships I have seen and can remember from Ken's films. Where . . .

G=Good
?=Questionable or Unsure
B=Bad

Mother - Son
The Music Lovers
sons (G)
son (?)
Tommy (B)
Mahler (?)
Lair of the White Worm (G)

We have already come across some of these, especially in "Lair of the White Worm," but Unseen is a relationship we do not see till the end of the film, as in "The Boyfriend," or one we do not see at all, but only hear about, as in "Lair of the White Worm."

Father - Son
Unseen
The Boyfriend (G)
Lair of the White Worm (G)

Seen
Tommy
father (G)
stepfather (B)
Women in Love (B)
Mahler (B)

Next time: final comments
