Most popular in the British Film Institute's film catalogue is... The Devils.

Is was a competition where you had to vote for the top three.  Second was Seven Samurai and third was Nosferatu (the original silent version by F.W. Murnau).

The top 10 is:
1.The Devils
2.Seven Samurai
3.Nosferatu
4.Tokyo Story
5.La Belle et la Bête
6.Ghost Stories at Christmas
7.Bande à part
8.L’Âge d’or
9.Godzilla
10.The Leopard

Two I didn't know
- Bande à part is by Godard- I like Godard but hadn't heard of this
- Ghost Stories at Christmas- this isn't a film but a box set of television ghost stories by the BBC at Christmas over the years
