And these (but it's less important):

Hi Ilia,

Good to hear from you.  I'll get back in a few days with those online films I know about, and I am sure others will add more.

Sorry for not getting back sooner.

To make a start, the bad news.  As far as I know the following are not available on DVD, video or to download
- Lourdes
- Portrait of a Goon
- Lion's Mouth (I have a copy but I can't copy it, sorry)

There are legal issues around Diary of a nobody.  I saw it at the BFI, but that was an exception.  The estate of the authors of the book on which the film was based have banned further showings of the film, because they did not like the way it was filmed.  However is this still the case? The book was published in 1888-1892 and the two authors died in 1912 and 1919.  The book can't still be in copyright.

I'll cover the rest this week.

Iain

"Are not available." Does that mean the films are lost and now should be considered "lost films," or does that mean that they are not available in a format that can be viewed, and one day may be available in a format that can be viewed?

As for "Diary of a Nobody," when did any author like the way that their story or life was portrayed by Russell? Though, he often made their story or life more interesting than it actually was.

Old Battersea House (A House in Bayswater) is here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFZlBYJ0_uY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFZlBYJ0_uY)

It has never been on DVD. Quite a beautiful film, it shows compassion for the people and Ken's usual vibrant imagery.

More soon.

You can get it online dubbed into Russian, but unless you speak Russian it won't help you too much.

Hi, do you still have the uncensored version of "The Devils", I've been searching this film for quite a while and it would be awesome to watch it!

There are two types of censorship on the film.  There is the "rape of Christ" sequence which was removed before the film was released.   Then there is some minor censorship where some short torture sequences were removed- nowadays these do not seem extreme at all.

The version with the torture sequences restored is available.  There is no official release where the censored Christ sequence is restored to the film.    The Devils DVD Special Edition DVD (with the Mark Kermode commentary) includes the sequence as a separate extra, and the original torture sequence is back in the film.  This DVD edition is highly recommended.

There have been some bootleg copies on ebay where the rape sequence has been crudely inserted into the film.  I don't particularly recommend this.

To be honest I am happy seeing the special edition, and glad to see the extras.  And if anyone hasn't seen the film, don't let the discussion of torture put you off.  It is a beautiful film, and the violence is neither exploitative or gory.

It's so hard to me find Ken Russell movies, in fact I have The Devils, Tommy, Women In Love, The Boy Friend, Altered States, Crimes of Passion, Gothic, Valentino, The Lair of the White Worm and Whore. I have only mainstream movies by him, but I really love them. I don't have all the others.

If you go on to the BBC site they have some of Ken's early documentaries, including Pop Goes the Easel.  It is from 60s television, black and white, but gives an idea of how Ken developed.

The Music Lovers is Ken's film about Tchaikovsky and got him an Oscar nomination.  It stars Glenda Jackson who won her first Oscar.  One of Ken's best films

It is the original in English but also has French subtitles, but these are not too distracting.
