Savage Messiah: Ken Russell / Re: Ken Russell quiz
« Last post by Iain Fisher on September 12, 2023, 11:00:33 PM »
Good attempts here and by email.  No-one got 100% (not even me who got a question wrong).

Which is the only Ken Russell film to have a sequel?  It was not directed by Ken.
Whore 2 (it is not very good and only vaguely related to Whore)

The Rainbow directed by Ken is a sequel (actually prequal) to Women in Love, both novels by D.H. Lawrence

Which film of his is one of the few non-Beatles films to include a Beatles song (not a cover)?
Billion Dollar Brain

Which film includes a homage to Eisenstein’s Alexander Nevsky?
Billion Dollar Brain

The connection between Russell, Godard and Sturridge?
The compilation film Aria.  The best segments are by these three.  Disappointing segments were by Jarman and Roeg

Which film has a script based on a translation by his then wife Vivian?
Salome's Last Dance.  Oscar Wilde wrote the play Salome in French to (unsuccessfully) avoid the censors who forbad depiction of biblical scenes on stage

Which film star has a role in Altered States aged five?
Drew Barrymore

Which ballet dancer appears in five Russell films as well as two television films?
Christopher Gable, notably as Fenby in Song of Summer.  He was principal dancer at the Royal Ballet

The connection between Polanski’s Cul de Sac and French Dressing?
Error in the question: The connection between Polanski’s Cul de Sac and Billion Dollar Brain?
Francois Dorleac appears in both.  B$B was her last film, she died before the premiere aged 25

Which film was later adapted into 3D?
Gothic (very bad in 3D)

Which film includes a homage to Death in Venice?
Mahler

Which actor has appeared in the most Russell films (excluding television films): Oliver Reed/ Glenda Jackson/ Murray Melvin/ Christopher Gable / Georgina Hale?
Glenda Jackson, Oliver Reed and Christopher Gable with 5 each.
If you include TV it becomes
Oliver Reed      5 + 4 + 1 Radio
Glenda Jackson      5 + 1
Murray Melvin      3 + 4
Christopher Gable   5 + 2
Georgina Hale      5 + 1

Savage Messiah: Ken Russell / Re: Ken Russell - Alice In Russialand
« Last post by Kseniya on September 12, 2023, 09:56:15 AM »
Hi there. I accidentally found this topic and I am very glad that people are interested in finding this rare film. Personally, I would like to see it not so much because of Ken Russell (sorry ;D ) but because of Steve Pemberton in it (my favorite British actor plays at least two roles in there). I see that no one has offered this clip here yet, so... This is the announcement of the TV Cultura channel for 1994: https://youtu.be/ArMaXRh7oow?si=D8gNgkQEXBh9zaL6 Starting from 1:05. VHSRip quality I suppose.

The portuguese title of "Alice in Russialand" was "Alice no PaĂs dos Russos". Hope that can help you a bit. Cheers!

Greetings,
I happened to come across the movie's overview with images while looking for footage of this picture, which is indeed rare.
As JoĂŁo wrote before, it aired publicly on Brazilian television at the same year it was released, sadly I don't think it was archived anyhow.
However it is awesome to see those pictures, I've really looked everywhere for this movie in its Portuguese titles, which is even more of a rarity.

Can I ask for a copy as well? I've recently found out about this film by stumbling upon a cassette with random outtakes from this movie:
https://youtu.be/i_fcSsQsSjo

I've since really wanted to take a look at the full movie, so if it is possible, please?..

Obviously, I will not upload it on YouTube, unless such action is welcome.

The footage linked here is in excellent quality, you have stumbled across a true rarity, appreciate your sharing very much.
It's unfortunate that, watching the complete picture in proper, high resolution recording any time soon seems like an dream..

Mr Fisher, do you consider archiving the picture publicly in the future?
If not, are they available for sharing personally?

Kind Regards,
Gabriel.

A chance to see a Persian version of Athol Fugard's A Place with the Pigs in Iran.

The director is Pedram Azmudeh and Hushang Hesami translated the play into Persian.  The actors include Shahin Pakzad and Sara Fat’hi.

Savage Messiah: Ken Russell / Chichester festival: The Music Lovers
« Last post by Iain Fisher on July 26, 2023, 04:49:27 PM »
The Music Lovers, Ken Russell's film about Tchaikovsky, will be shown at the Chichester Film Festival on 12 and 22 Aug 2023.

The festival guide is pretty grudging "However rife with inaccuracies... Unless you are seeking the whole truth".  Is it less accurate than Bernard Rose's The Beethoven Secret or Milos Foreman's Amadeus?   I have quoted from Barbara von Meck's 1893 letter to show how closely the script follows her account of her relationship with Tchaikovsky.

The festival website is here

Good answers, some right, some wrong.  Answers in August.
I'm modifying question 1- the title must be the same as the original film with a number added, so (a fictional one) Billion Dollar Brain 2

I'll give it a go. Without any cheating  :)

Which is the only Ken Russell film to have a sequel?  It was not directed by Ken.
Billion Dollar Brain - already a sequel itself, but followed by two more in the nineties.

Which film of his is one of the few non-Beatles films to include a Beatles song (not a cover)?
Again, Billion Dollar Brain. I believe it's been silenced and/or snipped from all home video releases. Probably used without permission and now too expensive to clear.

Which film includes a homage to Eisenstein’s Alexander Nevsky?
Can't answer, I glanced at the last post.

The connection between Russell, Godard and Sturridge?
All directed TV films commissioned by London Weekend Television??? Although, Godard's British Sounds was rejected.

Which film has a script based on a translation by his then wife Vivian?
Considering the rich language, Salome's Last Dance?

Which film star has a role in Altered States aged five?
Drew Barrymore

Which ballet dancer appears in five Russell films as well as two television films?
You've got me. It's not right, but Rudolf Nureyev?

The connection between Polanski’s Cul de Sac and French Dressing?
Pass

Which film was later adapted into 3D?
Pass again

Which film includes a homage to Death in Venice?
Mahler

Which actor has appeared in the most Russell films (excluding television films): Oliver Reed/ Glenda Jackson/ Murray Melvin/ Christopher Gable / Georgina Hale?
Glenda Jackson?

Huh, I actually know the answer to the third one.

Billion Dollar Brain. The scene of the final battle is a homage to Eisenstein’s Alexander Nevsky.

Steven Berkoff discussion / Dog/ Actor in Salford UK and Norway
« Last post by Iain Fisher on July 08, 2023, 11:44:38 PM »
Two Steven Berkoff one-man plays, Dog and Actor, are performed in Kristiansandin in Norway on 8 Sept 2023 and at the Quarry Theatre in Bradford, UK on 21 Sept 2023.  It is a Threedumb Theatre production.

Directed and Performed by Stephen Smith.  Dramaturgical Support from Michael Blundell-Lithco and Scott Le Crass.  Sound Design by Stephen Smith and Paul Richardson.

"Two explosive and comedic short plays written by Steven Berkoff, performed back-to-back by the same one actor.  The first play: DOG follows a day in the life of a racist football hooligan and his beloved pitbull terrier, Roy, who changes his life. The second play: ACTOR is a spoken word monologue which delves into the heart of the acting industry, humorously and poignantly portraying the trying life of a struggling artist.
Without the use of any set or props, DOG/ACTOR presents a masterclass in physical theatre and comedic storytelling, promising a thrilling theatrical experience."
