Savage Messiah: Ken Russell / Re: Guest Selection : Lair of the White Worm

Continuing . . .

Appeal
His films appeal to adult females.
This film with Amanda Donohoe appeals to males, especially younger males.

Atypical and typical
The internal logic is illogical. It is hard to tell if it is a Ken film.
The sex with violence is typical. Easy to tell it is a Ken film. Embrace the illogic.

Britishness
Makes it difficult for Americans to understand it.
Makes it interesting for Americans to try to understand it.

Camp
It needs to be more camp.
It needs to be less camp.

In the Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil

Guest : Drew

Their opinions, as I understand them, on the film, not all of which I agree with + my opinions on the film. Probably Ken's most frustrating and contradictory film.

Trailer
Old. Unique. Dating from the '80's. They do not make them like this anymore
New. With the new retro modern look of the '80's.

Film
Each of Ken's films are different.
Each of Ken's films are similar.

Film, Too
At times boring.
At other times luridly and bizarrely fascinating.

Ken "ON FIRE!"

Inventiveness in . . .
. . .every frame
. . .every scene

Camera use in . . .
. . .crash zooms
. . .extreme close-ups
. . .rapid cranes
. . .tilted
. . .tracking shots
. . .upside-down

Nothing like this has been seen since the MGM musicals of the 40s and 50s. (Actually, I like Tommy better than those musicals.)

As for the album itself, 2nd only to the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper." Though, Tommy comes across as being the better film adaptation (IMHO.)

Now, there's an idea. Instead of Michael Schultz directing the film "Sgt. Pepper." What if Ken had been the director?

--Finis--

Next time: we'll see what else is available of Ken in book form. Though, I'd like to see Lair of the White Worm : Ken Russell : Bram Stoker : Pocket Movie Guide.
