Though leap year every 4 years dates back as far as ancient Egypt.

Of course, the real flaw is that in Old Testament times the Jewish calendar would have been the only one in use...

I assume you mean 'Let the day perish wherein I was born'.

This gave rise to the old joke that Job was born on 29 February : supposedly, God refused to destroy the day completely, but made a concession to his servant by obliterating it three years in four. The Times still prints this every 4 years.

Don't really know the Indigo Girls too well, a bit to country for me. One lyric which I have picked up is a line in 'Blasted' "Blood running down the inside of her legs" which is a stage direction near the end. This could be a quote from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds 'Do you love me part one'. (which has a extra verse to the single version). This is on the 1993 album 'Let love in'. When mentiond this befour Iain pointed out that Sarah quote's some T.S. Eliot quotes.

There are also some Joy Division quotes in there. I thought there was a Diamanda Galás quote in 'Crave', but it is from the book of Job.

Thank you Sven! That clears up a lot then. So maybe the reference is not so explicit as my friends had thought - "It's 4pm in Leeds" is a lot less specific than "I'm in an expensive hotel room in Leeds", so somehow I start to doubt that Kane and the Indigo Girls had a mutual admiration thing going on.

Jess,

The song your friends were talking about is called "Leeds" and it appeared on the Album "Shaming of the sun" which came out in 1997. Blasted was first performed in 1995. The Indigo Girls song is set in hotel room in Leeds but it does not mention the words "In a very expensive hotel room in Leeds", it opens with: "It's dark at 4pm in Leeds". Although it's a strange coincidence, I'm not sure if the Indigo girls were trying to make a reference to Blasted. I'm never been to Leeds, so I don't know what the atmosphere in a hotel room over there is. greetings .sven

I got an interesting piece of feedback after my production of Cleansed closed. I was talking to two friends of mine who are Indigo Girls fans, and I mentioned that Kane specifies that Blasted in set "In a very expensive hotel room in Leeds", and they told me that apparently those exact words are the opening lyrics to an Indigo Girls song, apparently about the media and its role in reducing atrocities to simple stories: one of the most prominent themes in Blasted. Unforunately they couldn't remember the exact title of the Indigo Girls song, nor which album it appeared on.

Now I know Sarah drew a lot from her favourite popular music, but we couldn't figure out if Sarah stole it from the Indigo Girls as a clever reference, or whether the Indigo Girls were paying tribute to Kane and Blasted in their song. (I don't know which came first- the song or the play.)

Does anyone out there know anything about this? Which song is it? What year did it appear? Has anyone picked this reference up before?
