Alex Russell was in The Fall of the Louse of Usher as an adult (OK in a gorilla suit) and as a child in films such as The Music Lovers.

Thanks for that, as I missed him, and he probably has the most roles in any of the Russell children in his father's films. Also . . .

Billion Dollar Brain
Women in Love
The Devils
Savage Messiah
Mahler
Tommy

But, it is another group of children I want to talk about. While there are a number of directors that have done scenes that featured sex between adults and children,
Russell, as a percentage of his films, has probably done more than any other. It being featured in . . .

The Devils
Louis XIII (Graham Armitage) and his page-boy, who is, apparently, also the king's catamite.
The one I missed the implication upon first seeing the film.

Mahler
The old roue watching the boy in the sailor suit at the train station.
In homage to the film "Death in Venice."

Tommy
Uncle Ernie (Keith Moon) and Tommy Walker (Roger Daltry)
Perhaps, chronologically too old to be a child, but mentally still a child.

Salome's Last Dance
Salome (Imogen Millais Scott) and John the Baptist (Douglas Hodge)
Oscar Wilde (Nickolas Grace) and the Pageboy (Russell Lee Nash)
Not the actors, but the characters most likely still being children.

Lair of the White Worm
Sylvia Marsh (Amanda Donohoe) and Kevin (Chris Pitt)
The lady and the boy scout.

Why Ken's interest in the subject is anybody's guess?

Next time: Salome's Last Dance and Lair of the White Worm

Keep the kids close and your own kids closer.

While children are often seen in the films of Russell, they seldom play a prominent part. It is more like they are part of the set decoration. The number of children who do play a prominent part in any of the films of Russell can probably be counted on two hands.

"The Music Lovers
Dennis and John Myers who play the von Meck twins.

I cannot remember them even having one line in the film, but they are prominent in the film, if only because their being twins makes them unique in the films of Russell.

"Mahler"
Gary Rich who plays Young Gustav.

Probably the kid who has the most screentime in any of the films of Russell. And who was almost drowned by Russell.

"Tommy"
Barry Winch who plays Young Tommy.

Probably the most prominent of all the kid roles in any of the films of Russell.

"Altered States"
Drew Barrymore who plays Margaret Jessup.
Evan Richards who plays Young Rosenberg.

While she had previously appeared in a couple of movies made for TV, this was her theatrical film debut. And this was his acting debut, as this was the first time he appeared in any movie.

"The Rainbow"
Zoe Brown who played Ursula (aged 3)
Paul Reynolds who played the uncredited role of the schoolboy.

Sammi Davis said the hardest scene she had to do in the film was not any of her nude scenes, but the scene in which she had to physically punish Paul. She said she could not stop apologizing to him for what she had to do to him in the scene.

Next time: the films in which Russell cast his own children.
