"Dahling You Were Marvelous is a satirical play by Steven Berkoff that takes place in a London restaurant after a West End theatre opening night. The play is a series of vignettes that depict the world of theater through the conversations and actions of its characters. The play is a series of vignettes that comment on the superficiality of the theatrical world, the importance of social standing, and the need for praise.

Purgatory: John, a middle-aged actor, moves into a run-down guesthouse where he encounters romantic spinster Sarah".

Savage Messiah: Ken Russell / Savage Messiah in Wotton-Under-Edge, UK
« Last post by Iain Fisher on March 18, 2025, 06:25:14 PM »
Wotton Cinema are showing Savage Messiah on 30 March 2025.  This is part of a celebration of Sophie Gaudier-Brzeska.

"Sophie Gaudier-Brzeska, who lived in Wotton from 1916 to 1922, will be celebrated this month with events marking the centenary of her death... Sophie, a distinguished writer, poet, and author, was known for her work in English, French, and Polish... Despite her contributions, she has rested in an unmarked grave for a century.   A stone marker was finally unveiled at her grave in Tredworth Road Cemetery, Gloucester, on Monday, March 17, as part of the commemorative events.

The film screening is part of a weekend of centenary celebrations in Wotton-under-Edge, taking place from March 28 to March 30.  Throughout the weekend, Wotton Heritage Centre will be hosting a special display about Sophie Gaudier-Brzeska.

On Friday, March 28, at 7.30pm, Del Barrett, director of the Hundred Heroines Museum, will give a talk entitled In Sophie’s Orbit, at the Chipping Clubroom, which is next to the heritage centre.

On Saturday, March 29, there will be a circular walk inspired by Sophie’s routes, a free workshop on creating identity through masks and photography, and a series of talks on Sophie’s life and legacy at Wotton Cinema.

The day will end with a Polish dinner with readings at Good Food On the Edge.

Savage Messiah: Ken Russell / Lair of the White Worm and Coppola's Dracula
« Last post by Iain Fisher on March 16, 2025, 06:24:25 PM »
An interesting view of Lair of the White Worm from a review.

"It’s critical at this point to note that The Lair of the White Worm might be a masterpiece. You could imagine Francis Ford Coppola watching it in preparation for making Bram Stoker’s Dracula and taking copious notes, only to scribble in the margins, 'But a little less horny'".

Athol Fugard discussion / Re: Athol Fugard passes away
« Last post by Iain Fisher on March 11, 2025, 01:22:14 PM »
Sadly Athol Fugard has died aged  92.  He passed away in his Stellenbosch home near Cape Town of cardiac arrest after a long illness.

Some tributes:

"Fugard defined the essence of what he called "pure theater" as nothing more "than the actor and the stage, the actor in space and silence." As an artist he resisted labels, but he conceded that if his work is to be categorized "then it must be as 'actors' theatre.' Humanity was always at the core of Fugard's art" (Mark Kennedy and Gerald Imray, LA Times, 10 March 2025, click here https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2025-03-10/athol-fugard-south-african-theater-artist-whose-works-confronted-apartheid-dies-at-92).

"Fugard brought critical, wrenching portrayals of South African society under apartheid to international stages, including Broadway, helping to generate the wave of worldwide criticism that eventually led to the end of that policy in the country, in the process gaining wider access for South African dramaturgy outside that nation" (Carmel Dagan, Variety, 10 March 2025, click here https://variety.com/2025/film/global/athol-fugard-dead-playwright-1236333147/).

"His longtime friend and collaborator John Kani mourned: 'I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend Athol Fugard. May his soul rest in eternal peace'" (iAfrica, 9 March 2025, click here https://iafrica.com/athol-fugard-iconic-south-african-playwright-dies-at-92/).

"Now he is dead, and a writer of true integrity has gone. He loved the actor who had played Miss Helen in Mecca, the great Yvonne Bryceland – his muse. He loved women; he wrote about the feral stoicism and optimism of the female animal with a warmth quite unusual in a writer – maybe excepting Ibsen. He understood fatalism, and loneliness, and had the ear of a poet for ordinary folk" (Janet Suzman, The Guardian, 9 Mar 2025, click here).
"The South African government confirmed Fugard's death and said the country 'has lost one of its greatest literary and theatrical icons, whose work shaped the cultural and social landscape of our nation'" (Mark Kennedy and Gerald Imray, The Independent, 10 March 2025, click here https://www.independent.co.uk/news/south-africa-cape-town-johannesburg-san-francisco-chronicle-black-b2712032.html).

Savage Messiah: Ken Russell / Re: Ken Russell - Alice In Russialand
« Last post by Kseniya on March 02, 2025, 08:00:40 AM »
YOU'RE MY HERO! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR UPLOADING!!! I will watch it definitely!

Hi there. I accidentally found this topic and I am very glad that people are interested in finding this rare film. Personally, I would like to see it not so much because of Ken Russell (sorry ;D ) but because of Steve Pemberton in it (my favorite British actor plays at least two roles in there). I see that no one has offered this clip here yet, so... This is the announcement of the TV Cultura channel for 1994: https://youtu.be/ArMaXRh7oow?si=D8gNgkQEXBh9zaL6 Starting from 1:05. VHSRip quality I suppose.

The portuguese title of "Alice in Russialand" was "Alice no País dos Russos". Hope that can help you a bit. Cheers!

hello! i found it and uploaded to youtube! :)
