12.00PM 27th November THE MAKING OF 'BOUDICA BITES BACK'
CIRIC (Creative Industries Research & Innovation Centre - Swansea Metropolitan University) is proud to present Ken Russell, Film Director
and Steve Sullivan, Independent Film Maker and Producer
Legendary film director Ken Russell and Producer Steve Sullivan will discuss the making of Boudica Bites Back, a live action/CGI cine-opera.
Boudica Bites Back was filmed in November 2007 and completed in Summer 2008. It was made with a largely student cast and crew from Swansea Metropolitan University’s Video, Performing Arts and FADE animation courses. Also joining the crew were design students from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Cardiff, further demonstrating the real spirit of co-operation between academic faculties and institutions that made this film happen.
The students were mentored and supervised by top industry professionals, including Director of Photography Mark Veysey, hair and make-up designer Scott Miller (Bauhaus, Cardiff) and editor Mike Bradsell.
BBB was filmed on the High Definition video facilities at CIRIC (Creative Industries Research & Innovation Centre), founded by Professor Andrea Liggins and based at SMU. It was shot over five days in the Dynevor Centre For Art, Design & Media’s green screen studio and composited in CIRIC’s state-of-the-art Avid Nitris suite.
Boudica Bites Back was commissioned as part of the ongoing CIRIC Masters scheme, wherein students get the opportunity to work alongside some of the world’s greatest living filmmakers and innovators of the moving image. In return for their support the filmmakers are given free reign to express themselves artistically and make a piece of work in which they have the final editorial control.
The film is the first time that Ken Russell has worked on High Definition Video and his first experience of working with CGI special effects. The discussion will be illustrated with extracts from the film.
