Title: Use of Sarah Kane text
Post by: James on November 02, 2011, 08:34:46 PM
Hi there,

I'm a composer of music currently working on a project for electric tape and solo piano. I would like to use significant chunks of text from Sarah Kane's Crave (probably amounting to about four pages), but of course will need to acquire permission to do so. Would anyone happen to know who I would have to contact in order to request permission to use text? Does anyone know the likelihood of it being granted? I only intend to use text from Crave in the piece and it will be spoken as in a performance of the play, not set to music. This is a student project and I am unlikely to make any profit from the work at all.

I realise this isn't entirely relevant to the general discussions here, but I'm really not sure who else to consult.

Many thanks,
James

Hi James,

Your project sounds exciting.  For the rights you should contact Ruth Arnaud at

Casarotto Ramsay & Associates Ltd
National House
60-66 Wardour Street
London W1V 4ND
Great Britain

You can also email her at ruth@casarotto.uk.com

Casarotto are fast in getting back to you.

It´s worth giving details of what you intend to do.  The description you give seems suitable, only I would change " significant chunks of text from Sarah Kane's Crave (probably amounting to about four pages)" to "small chunks of text from Sarah Kane's Crave (probably amounting to only four pages)".

Also add why you like the play.  Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Iain
